The road surface condition detector cannot determine the road surface condition when there is fog. However, if the temperature is near freezing and fog is present, road ice is highly likely.
The road surface condition detector only looks at a one foot diameter area of asphalt located on the summit ridge adjacent to the United Kingdom Infra-Red Telescope. As Mauna Kea has many micro-climates, the detector may indicate the road is clear while hazardous conditions exist in other locations.
