Area Forecast Discussion
National Weather Service Honolulu HI
351 PM HST Wed Apr 17 2024

.SYNOPSIS...
Mostly dry and pleasant conditions will prevail into next week.
Trade winds will strengthen through Thursday and continue into
next week, with a slight weakening Saturday. Showers will be
minimal, but any incoming precipitation will focus windward and
mauka.

&&

.DISCUSSION...
Water vapor imagery shows an upper low over the western end of the
state late this afternoon. High pressure at the surface is
centered far to the northwest resulting in moderate northeast
trade winds across the state. Visible satellite shows cloud build
ups over the island interiors, but with trades expected to
strengthen as the driving high moves closer, most of the cloud
cover will shift to windward and mauka areas beginning tonight.

Upstream showery clouds may moving in from the north northwest tonight
into Thursday morning and possibly bring a few showers along
windward slopes, but precipitation amounts will be minimal.
Trades will become moderate to fresh Thursday into Friday with
isolated windward showers as the airmass continues to be dry and
stable into next week. Winds will briefly taper off Saturday, but
will veer easterly and strengthen again to fresh breezes Sunday
into the first half of next week.

&&

.AVIATION...
Light to locally moderate north to northeast flow will gradually
shift more northeasterly and strengthen on Thursday. While VFR
conditions will dominate over most areas through Thursday, an
area of shallow moisture may produce MVFR ceilings over northern
and windward slopes of Kauai tonight and spread to Oahu early
Thursday. No AIRMETs are in effect at this time, though we will
need to monitor Kauai in the short term.

&&

.MARINE...
Moderate NE trades persist through the forecast period possibly
strengthening slightly during the weekend.

Small surf along S facing shores hold through Thursday as
overlapping S swells maintain elevated surf through the end of the
week. The current NW swell becomes increasingly N as it gradually
subsides through Thursday. A small N swell will bring a modest
bump to exposed shorelines during the latter half of the weekend. Surf
along E facing shores remains small.
